Body waxing

Our bodies are covered in hair that grows in different cycles. Some can be dark and harsh, while others can be so thin that you can't visibly see them. There are many ways to remove hair from various parts of our body and waxing is just one.

Waxing is a semi-permanent hair removal method that removes unwanted hair from the roots. New hairs will not grow back in the previously waxed area for two to eight weeks, depending on the growth and cycles of our hair. Almost any area of the body can be waxed and there are several types of waxing available. Some must be done by a licensed cosmetologist or esthetician. If waxing is done regularly for several years, permanent hair reduction can be achieved. The different types of hair removal that can be performed are:

Brow wax

Genital waxing

Male Genital Wax

Hollywood / Brazilian / French wax

Leg wax

Arm / underarm wax

Abdomen wax

Back wax

Foot wax

Chest wax

Wax for the whole body

Waxing is accomplished by spreading a combination of fine wax over the skin. Then a strip of cloth or paper is pressed on top and pulled off with a quick motion against the direction of hair growth. This removes the wax along with the hair. Another method uses hard wax (as opposed to strip wax). In this case, the wax is applied somewhat thickly and without cloth or paper strips. The wax then hardens when it cools, allowing it to be easily removed by a technician without the aid of cloths. This method of hair removal is very beneficial for people who have sensitive skin.

The parts of the body that you should never wax are the inside of the ears, the nose, the eyelashes, the eyelids, the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet. These areas are of particular concern due to sensitive skin that can be severely damaged by waxing. Areas of the body that should only be waxed by a licensed professional include the genitals and nipples. The bikini area, eyebrows, and lip area are popular with women for waxing.

Pros and cons

There are many advantages of waxing compared to other forms of hair removal. It is an effective method of removing large amounts of hair at once. This method is long lasting. It will take two to eight weeks for hair in the depilated areas to grow back. When hair is shaved or removed with a depilatory cream, the hair is removed at the surface rather than at the root. Within a few days, the hair can be seen on the surface. With these methods, the hair tends to grow back as rough stubble. Areas that are repeatedly waxed over long periods of time often have regrowth that is softer.

There are also many disadvantages to Waxing. Waxing can be painful when the strip is removed from the skin. Although the pain does not last long, it can be quite uncomfortable. Another downside to waxing is cost - waxing is usually done by a licensed cosmetologist and can be quite expensive. You can buy waxing supplies for yourself, but they can be difficult to use on some parts of your body. Hair removal is not permanent. When removed in the opposite direction of hair growth, the wax strip can disrupt hair follicles and cause hair to start growing in different directions.

This could also make hair growth more noticeable and make other hair removal methods more difficult. Fortunately, this risk is minimal if hair removal is done correctly. Another problem with waxing is that some people experience ingrown hairs, red bumps, and minor bleeding. This is more likely to occur when plucking areas where the hair is thick, especially the first few times when the follicles are stronger. While generally impossible to remove, regular exfoliation can reduce ingrown hairs in conjunction with an application of astringent or a mixture of astringent and oil (usually azulene or baby oil).
