The rise of Wi-Fi action cameras

Action camera technology is advancing at breakneck pace: As the list of features grows, physically the cameras get smaller, stronger, and more versatile. Features like Full HD recording, still images over 10 MP (megapixels), and extreme resistance to the elements are now the norm for most modern action cameras, which begs the question, what's next?

A connected world

Consider everyday devices like your computer, mobile phone, tablet, television, radio, and even your car's computer system, and there's a good chance that most of them use Wi-Fi in one way or another.
We are a connected world, capable of consuming and sharing data with a global audience at the push of a button, so it is no surprise that action cameras, devices ultimately designed to produce shared content, are some of the latest devices to adopt Wi-Fi connectivity Three action cameras that lead the way are:

JVC ADIXXION

ADIXXION is the first real action camera to come from JVC, and despite being a product of a company that has built its reputation on home audio and video systems, it lives up to the best.

The ADIXXION features a quad proof design, which means it is built to withstand water, shock, dust and snow. In true action camera style, the camera features 1080p Full HD recording, a Digital Image Stabilizer (DIS), a wide-angle lens, and a 5MP camera with two different modes, and everything is controlled via the built-in 1.5 "LCD screen.

The camera incorporates Wi-Fi that has a number of benefits: smartphone connectivity, to align shots on your smartphone or tablet; Wireless data transfer, to transfer files from the camera to a PC; HD live webcast; and live streaming from USTREAM. The camera can be used directly from the get-go due to the built-in Wi-Video software for Windows, which also supports sharing on social networks like YouTube, Facebook and Twitter.

Wi-Fi iON Air Pro

This sleek little camera is suitable for all sports enthusiasts, from skiers to skydivers and everyone in between. It is capable of recording in 1080p, 960p, or 720p, can capture 5MP still images through two different modes, and is waterproof up to 30 feet.

The iON Air Pro Wi-Fi comes fully connected to Wi-Fi, allowing you to share videos and photos over a wireless network, stream to your smartphone, and upload content to iON's Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, or cloud . All this connectivity is possible thanks to the iON Wi-Fi PODZ accessory and the free iON application.

iON has a unique approach to storage: instead of using physical memory cards, it uses cloud storage. When you buy an iON Air Pro Wi-Fi, you get 8 GB of free cloud storage, which can be increased at an additional cost.

GoPro HD Hero2

If you like action sports, chances are you've heard of GoPro, the household name in the world of action cameras. Once again, the GoPro HD Hero2 has everything you could want from an action camera, from full 1080p HD recording and 11MP photos, to extensive mounting options and a massive 32GB memory capacity.

GoPro is one of the most versatile action cameras on the market and has a host of accessories and mounts to further enhance its performance, such as the waterproof diving case, or even the GoPro 3D Hero System, for 3D recording.

The GoPro differs from the previous two cameras in that it does not come connected to Wi-Fi: it requires the BacPac Wi-Fi GoPro. Once connected, the additional Wi-Fi remote can be used to control the camera from up to 600 feet away, and can even control up to 50 different cameras at once!

Coming soon for Wi-Fi BacPac is the GoPro application for Android and iOS smartphones and tablets. This app will allow live HD streaming to your smartphone, tablet, or computer, and give you the option to use your device as a wireless remote control. You can also use your smartphone as an 'access point' when you are away from a Wi-Fi connection.

For action sports enthusiasts who like to share their adventures online, a Wi-Fi connected action camera is a must-have accessory. While it doesn't mean an exhaustive list of each model, the three mentioned in this article are more than worth considering if you are planning to buy an action camera.
